SUMMARY

A proactive lower middle order batsman, Joe Solomon is the only player ever to score centuries in his first three First-class innings. A prolific run scorer at the domestic level, he always also reasonable success in Test cricket, often adding invaluable runs with the lower order. With the ball in hand, he could bowl useful leg breaks but was a part-timer at best. However, it's as a fielder that Solomon will forever be remembered, for it was his direct hit that ensured the first-ever tie in a Test match. A fantastic throw from square leg and it was a moment of brilliance that even impressed Don Bradman. That series was eventful for Solomon who was hitwicket in the next game after his cap fell on the stumps. After his retirement, he became a national selector for a considerable time before shifting base to New York.
